Right-sized packaging made from the appropriate corrugated board grade is already one of the best ways to ship a product safely.
Because the box fits closely around the product, there is less empty space, the product has less room to move and there is less need for additional filling material. For most shipments, that is more than enough to ensure safe transport and a great customer experience.
But some products need just a little extra protection.
Think of fragile products, unusual shapes, multiple products packed together or items that simply must stay firmly in place during transport.
That is why we have further expanded the possibilities for tailor-made buffers within Slimbox.
The perfect combination: a tailor-made box and buffer
At Slimbox, we always start from the same principle: the packaging is designed around the product.
The same now applies to the protection inside the box.
A Slimbox buffer is designed together with the box and adapted to both the product and the packaging. Not a standard protective element that happens to fit inside the box, but two components designed to work together.
The box provides the right external dimensions and structural protection. The buffer fixes and supports the product exactly where needed.
A perfect combination for a better packaging result.
Want to take it one step further? An opening or cut-out can, for example, be incorporated into the buffer to hold one or several products precisely in place.
This means the inside of the packaging can be tailored just as precisely as the outside.
Different buffers for different applications
Depending on the product and the level of protection required, several options are available.
FEFCO 503
A simple and efficient buffer solution for products that need additional support or distance from the outer walls of the box.
The structure is created from corrugated board and folds itself into shape. No tape or glue is required.
FEFCO 910
The FEFCO 910 offers more possibilities for positioning and supporting a product within the packaging.
Here too, the buffer is designed so that it forms and holds its shape by itself. This keeps the solution easy to use and entirely based on corrugated board.
FEFCO 940
For applications requiring maximum fixation and protection, a FEFCO 940 can be used — as demonstrated in our video.
Its construction firmly supports the product and helps keep it in position during transport. The buffer is completely tailor-made and, once again, requires no tape or glue to maintain its shape.
The best buffer therefore depends not only on the product itself, but also on how it is packed, handled and transported.
Automatically combine the right buffer with the right box
Good packaging should not only protect the product. It should also be easy and repeatable for the person packing it.
That is why the box and buffer can be linked together within a Slimbox favourite.
When a recurring product is selected or scanned, the correct packaging is immediately available. The corresponding buffer is generated together with the right box.
No separate decisions. No searching for the correct protection. No dependence on the experience of the packer.
The right product gets the right box and the right buffer, every time.
This is particularly valuable for recurring SKUs, fragile products or packaging flows where consistency is important.
Less plastic, less filling material
The buffers are made entirely from corrugated board. In many applications, they can therefore replace traditional protective materials such as plastic air cushions, foam or other separate protective components.
This also fits well with the broader move towards more recyclable and simpler packaging solutions under the PPWR.
Instead of creating a box first and then filling the remaining space with additional materials, protection is designed into the packaging from the start.
Fewer material types, less complexity and packaging that can more easily be handled as one complete solution.
Protection where it is needed
The philosophy remains the same.
For most products, a perfectly fitted Slimbox box made from the appropriate board grade provides more than enough protection. Adding protection where it is not needed makes little sense.
But when a product does require additional support, we can now design that protection even more precisely.
